With over 80% of international trade carried out by sea, the Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on global maritime transport. After a significant reduction associated with the economic consequences of the pandemic, maritime transport of goods showed growth for the first time. The increase in volumes was facilitated by the normalization of world trade, the restoration of familiar and the development of new logistics routes, as well as the introduction of modern approaches to working in the industry.
According to experts, in 2021, about 12 billion tons of cargo were delivered by sea. This is 400 million tons or 3.4% more than a year earlier. Thus, maritime transportation has reached the pre-pandemic level, and the volume of transportation of some categories of goods even exceeded the figures for 2019.
Thus, grain was transported by 9.3% more, liquefied gas - by 6.9%, container transportation showed an increase of 4.7%, ore - 4.3%. At the same time, the volumes of transportation of coal, oil products, and crude oil decreased.
It is expected that in 2022 the indicator of transportation by sea transport routes will also show a positive trend and reach the figure of 12.5 billion tons.
